Wiimotes: The Mouse and 3D Virtual Reality
Many know the Nintendo Wii remote for its use in Wii games such as tennis or boxing but what some are unaware of is its amazing embedded functionality – an accelerometer and an Infrared camera. Also, since it has an embedded bluetooth chip, it can be paired to a computer and with the right drivers, it will be identified as an input device such as a keyboard or mouse.
With the accelerometer, one can roll, pitch or yaw to control an application. In the example below, an interfacing application called GlovePie is used to control Google Earth:
Alternatively, the Wiimote can be used for headtracking which changes the perspective of an image viewed on a screen depending on the user’s position giving it that 3D feel. A researcher named Johnny Lee developed this really cool app shown below:
