Thoughts on Job Hunting in the Recession

The last several weeks have been quite challenging. While finding jobs in this economic climate is rough, switching jobs is not any better as I’ve since come to learn. I’ve been looking to transition jobs lately and fortunately, I got a job offer about a fortnight ago, after an arduous search, to work for an amazing company in the Bay Area, CA.

There’s a lot of advice out there on what strategies to adopt especially now when many companies are either folding up or announcing lay offs, and I tried to read some of it although after a while it became a tad overwhelming. So this is not “expert advice” (find some here), just some ideas I’ve picked up in my job search so I promise to keep it short and sweet :) . Continue reading

Male Chimps Dealing Meat for Sex?

gomes3chimps

A study conducted in Ivory Coast suggest that they do!

Male chimps that are willing to share the proceeds of their hunting expeditions mate twice as often as their more selfish counterparts.

This is a long-term exchange, so males continue to share their catch with females when they are not fertile, copulating with them when they are.

Female chimps are lazy apparently don’t hunt much so for them it’s hard to come by meat for their much-needed protein. So the males go out, hunt, bring back the bounty and otherwise outdo themselves for the ladies, knowing all too well that their efforts are not in vain. Well, well :) .

The reseachers believe they’re onto something; that this study “could lay the foundations for human studies exploring the link between good hunting skills and reproductive success“.

Really. I couldn’t help but think that there’s some correlation in there somewhere..

GM + Segway: Project PUMA

I’m reading this and thought it quite interesting – General Motors and Segway are collaborating to create an electric vehicle that looks kinda strange.. I don’t know for sure if there’s an actual name for it yet (I guess PUMA is it’s name), but they do have a prototype out:

Project P.U.M.A.

Steve Woz will dig this.

It’s a two-seater EV with top speeds of up to 35mph/56kph for anywhere between 25 and 35 miles (40 – 56 km) on a single charge. Supposedly it’s mostly for in-city navigation and GM/Segway seem to have much bigger plans for it:

I wonder how it will do during snowy/icy conditions? Probably not much better than a bike. Cost? GM says you may have to pony up to 1/4 the cost of a conventional car.

Nevertheless, GM is taking a stab at innovation in response to consumer demand for smaller and more fuel-efficient automobiles. It may actually find some following once the concept moves to production, provided GM doesn’t end up in bankruptcy.
